Jan Nelson
I am a visual storyteller. I acquired an interest in photography at an early age. My mother, Peg Kirkdorfer, was an amateur photographer, and familiar black and white photographs of family and friends peer back at me from stacks of old albums. " I grew up believing every mom had a camera around her neck. Mine did." After my mom died, I inherited her cameras and equipment. Small notes in her handwriting flitter out from pages of her photography books.
I was born and raised in St. Joseph, Michigan, a picturesque resort town on the southeast shore of Lake Michigan, where I reside with my husband, Rolan. Our son, Dane, and daughter, Karly both live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The opportunity to pursue my art career began when, as a family, we moved to Florida, and I completed my professional photographic degree from Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Southeast Museum of Photography is located at Daytona State where I met many famous, accomplished photographers.
